Gutters are priced by the linear foot, plus each downspout. A one-story ranch and a two-story colonial with the same footprint can differ a lot, because of the ladder work and the downspout runs.

Aluminum, steel or copper
Seamless aluminum is formed on site from a coil, so there are no seams along the run to leak. Copper costs several times more per foot.
What the quote should cover
- gutter size (5 or 6 inch) and metal thickness
- number and size of downspouts, and where they discharge
- hanger type and spacing
- removal of the old gutters
- guards, if you want them, priced as a separate line
Gutters and the roof
Water that backs up behind a gutter rots the fascia board and the edge of the roof deck. If the roof is due, do the roof first and the gutters right after, with the same company if they do both.
