The four usual problems
Sagging. The gutter dips between hangers, water collects in the low spot and spills over. J&M Gutter Tech says clogged gutters are the number one cause, since wet leaves are heavy. Old spike-and-ferrule hangers also loosen over time. J&M’s fix is screw-in hangers spaced 18 to 24 inches apart.
Pulling away from the house. Home Team Construction calls this the most urgent version, because it usually means the fascia board the gutter hangs on has gone soft. New hangers will not hold in rotted wood, so the fascia gets fixed first.
Leaking seams. Sectional gutters are joined with sealant, and Home Team says Long Island’s freeze-thaw cycles break it down. Corners and end caps are the usual spots.
Downspouts. Clogged elbows and joints that separate. Home Team says the water should come out at least 5 to 10 feet from the foundation, so it is not soaking the basement wall.

When to stop repairing
J&M Gutter Tech uses a simple 50% rule: if the repair costs more than half of new gutters, replace them. All American Home Improvement adds that gutters badly rusted, cracked along their length, or pulling away in several places are past saving.
Near the water there is one more thing. Home Team notes that salt air slowly thins aluminum, so very old gutters on the South Shore can be too far gone to hold new hangers.
Before winter
Fall is the time to deal with it. A gutter that sags or leaks in October holds water that freezes in January, and that is how ice builds up along the roof edge.
