Siding is priced by the square foot of wall, so the size of the house drives the number more than anything else. The material sets the rest.
What it costs here, by material
Installed prices published by Long Island Exterior Co. in April 2026:
| Material | Installed, per sq ft |
|---|---|
| Vinyl | $4 to $8 |
| Insulated vinyl | $6 to $10 |
| LP SmartSide | $7 to $12 |
| James Hardie fiber cement | $8 to $14 |
| Cedar shake or wood | $10 to $18 |
For a 1,500 to 2,000 square foot home, the same source puts vinyl at $9,000 to $18,000 and James Hardie at $16,000 to $30,000. Taking off and disposing of the old siding adds $1 to $3 per square foot.
Which material fits
- Vinyl is the least expensive option here and needs the least upkeep.
- Fiber cement (James Hardie is the brand you will hear) costs more, looks closer to painted wood and needs repainting over time.
- Cedar shingles cost the most and need the most care. You see them most out east.
What the quote should say
- the brand and product line, and the color
- whether old siding comes off or the new siding goes over it
- what happens to trim, soffits and fascia
- house wrap: the product, and whether it is included
- how window and door openings are flashed
Do it with the roof, windows or gutters
Many Long Island roofers do siding too. If your windows or gutters are due, pricing them together means one crew and one set of trim work. Add them to the same request.
